Introduction

 Hello everyone! 

    My name is Jaxon Foster and I am a Junior at the University of Alaska fairbanks. I am looking forward to writing these blogs in the future. First a little about myself, I grew up all around the world living half my life outside of the country (South Korea and Germany). I  love to travel, most recently I was in Japan with a friend of mine from Texas (picture Below). I Love it here in Alaska and can't wait for it to get cold again! 

    My relationship with music is mostly just Listening to Music on the Radio Whenever I am driving somewhere. Having lived outside of the country, I've had the opportunity to listen to a lot of different types of music. My favorite artists and bands are Steve Lacy, Kino, Nirvana, Oasis, and Thaiboy Digital. I dabble a little bit in playing music myself. My house has a guitar, and I attempt to play it (poorly) every so often. I've not had the chance to go to many concerts, but the most recent one I've been to is a two-chains concert in Florida about a year and a half ago. I look forward to reading my classmates' comments in the upcoming weeks. I've gone ahead and linked my current favorite song for this week. Give it a listen.

    Reading what your classmates wrote is one of the best parts of this class. I have been exposed to music that I never would have heard otherwise and I do music every single day.

          The song I've chosen to analyze is Dumb by Nirvana. The song appeared on their 1993 critically acclaimed final album In Utero. Some identifiable tracks from this record include Heart Shaped Box and Francis Bean Will Have Her Revenge. The band would break up less than a year later due to frontman Kurt Cobain's death. This song (particularly the MTV Unplugged version) has always stuck out to me. I remember listening to it for the first time and being surprised a prominent cello was in a rock song. The song can be interpreted a few different ways, but the alleged meaning put forward by Cobain is that the song is about people who can go through life without knowing anything but still be happy. Another interpretation put forward by Cobain's daughter is that the song is "{A] stripped-down version of Kurt's perception of himself – of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation." Music Analysis #2

Bad Habit by Steve Lacy was my favorite song of 2022. This one song got me to listen to the rest of his discography. I would now consider myself a fairly big Steve Lacy fan. Some other songs of his that I really enjoy include N side, static, and Infrunami. I remember watching the grammys that same year only for  Bad Habit to be snubbed by a song neither my friends or I had ever heard before.  The melody of this song is very smooth and repetitive. You can see this quite clearly in the chorus with the central lyric of “I wish I knew”. The melody is very relaxed, almost feeling conversational. I think the melody of this song really drew me in as a listener. It is very catchy and a borderline ear-worm that I could not get out of my head for days. The song also has a moderate tempo Which I think serves the song greatly. If the song was paced any slower or faster I believe that it would greatly affect the song in both tone and feel.
